Born and raised in Indiana, I believe there are no better sounds on a summer evening than the snap of a stem off an ear of corn, or the crack of a baseball bat. My heart for adventure has sent me all over the world, but my husband, our two children, and I now live outside of Washington, DC. Kevin's desire to serve the greater good in his career field brought us here, and we are constantly amazed by all of the opportunities available to us and our children in this bustling metropolis.
As an undergraduate, I attended Bowdoin College where I studied Political Science and French. Following graduation, I spent three months in a small village ten hours northwest of Nairobi, Kenya where I witnessed third-world medicine for the first time in my life. Upon returning to the United States, I completed a post-baccalaureate program at Bryn Mawr College in preparation for medical school. I completed my medical degree at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine in 2005, and my residency at Massachusetts General Hospital with the Department of Anesthesia, Critical Care and Pain Medicine in 2009. From Boston, I moved to Dayton, Ohio where I fulfilled a three-year military commitment as a staff anesthesiologist with the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Once I completed my military commitment, we moved to San Diego where I completed a fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine. I then held dual academic appointments at the University of California at San Diego as Assistant Professor with the Department of Anesthesiology and with the Department of Internal Medicine practicing both anesthesiology and palliative medicine. For five years we lived in beautiful Asheville, North Carolina where I exclusively practiced palliative medicine at Mission Hospital, and where I also held an Assistant Professorship through the University of North Carolina. Now, I am the Regional Palliative Care Program Director for MedStar's Southern Maryland Region, incorporating both Southern Maryland Hospital and St. Mary's Hospital. I am also the Chair of these hospitals' respective Bioethics Committees. |
